Jan 29: Skrillex @ LA Live Event Deck

Ah the finale of my birthday month, Jomoery (nice one Ma). Skrillex was concluding his week-long tour in LA and closed it out at the LA Live 360 rotating stage. Cool concept. Spacious venue. Sh*tty acoustics. Unless you were standing by the stage, you couldn't really feel the music so much. And when you WERE by the stage, the bass was destroying your ear drums (check the video at the end of the post for some shattering bass). Still an awesome way to end the weekend though. Opening acts were Nadastrom, Dada Life, and Benga. Skrillex himself brought a few special guests on stage, as well as a fair share of freaks: go-go dancers, The Avengers, wrestlers, and a midget version of the Village People. Only in LA.

The second annual Birthday Bassh (the extra S is for the extra ASS!) with Maggie and Yonten. We booked Medusa Lounge which wasn't even supposed to be open at all. But since we asked (and I guess there was another party as well) they opened up the venue for us and us only! Too bad the DJ was mediocre, and had I given him more of a heads up, DJ Mark Marcelo would have spun... Curses. To make things worse, Maggie sprained her foot literally the day before the party. Ugh.. But good times nonetheless. I didn't "blackout" per se, but I don't remember all of these pictures. Here's to setting the tone for 2012. Thanks everyone for the drinks and coming out!

Still catching up. Still eating. Still enjoying the month of Jomuary (nice one Ma!). My buddy Michael wanted to take me out for my birthday, and was willing to drive down from LA on a weeknight. Works for me. He'd heard talks about a sushi spot called Ohshima, and insisted we go there for the omakase (chef's menu) experience. It's a ~~little~~ lot on the pricey side, but if you got money to blow or you love food, give it a shot. For a better experience, sit at the sushi bar. For the best experience, eat with your hands (not chopsticks), and don't use any soy sauce. I'm far from a sushi connoisseur, but this was the best sushi experience I ever had. And even better because it was with good company. Thanks bud. I owe you for the next meal for sure.

Let's keep the birthday dinners coming!! Made a trip down to SD and kicked it with some of the homies. I got to check out one of Arcelon's new spots called Craft & Commerce. He's really bringing the hipster vibe from LA to SD. And I don't mind! A nice food and drink menu (as long as you don't need vodka or ketchup) and a very rustic ambiance. Jomo-approved. Thanks for the drinks and food Guil!

It's my birthday! Using some of Brian's pictures for this post. It was my actual day of birth, so I had dinner with the fams. Sushi last year. Sushi this year. (I'll take a free expensive dinner with purpose any chance I get!) At the recommendation of DKo and Mags, we checked out Kagura which is in the same lot at Slater's 50/50. The food was really good! Except for the 1 piece of sushi that had the skin on it still. That threw me back into childhood when I hated fish, and I almost threw up at the table. The foie gras sushi and kobe beef carpaccio were amazing. As was the panna cotta.

And some bonus pictures of some of the pictures my friends posted as their Facebook default pictures... Last year they each picked an embarrassing picture alone. This year, they added some speech bubbles. "Sh*t Jomo Says".... Assholes! Clever assholes at that.

Alright it's birthday week time. Too much food. Too much alcohol. Plenty of Facebook posts and embarrassing pictures. And lots of love from my friends and family. The bar has been set pretty high. I can't really imagine a better birthday. So thank you everyone for the love and birthday wishes!

Dinner #1. Gathered some of the locals and some not-so-locals at The Catch in Anaheim to try out the OMG Burger. Take this Goliath down in a solo mission and you get $500, your name immortalized on a plaque, and a triple bypass. Only 1 man has done it so far, but it's still fairly new. We barely put a dent on it with a full squad on hand. The burger itself was pretty good! But it got cold pretty quickly when we sat there for 10 minutes taking pictures and determining if we eat it classic style or classy.

You win this round OMG burger... Until next time.

This was definitely the worst offensive game I've seen to date in person. Both teams barely cracked the 70-point mark. But a win is a win. And free tacos are free tacos! A lot of returns back to LA. Shaq was back with the TNT crew. And Lamar got a standing ovation when he stepped onto the court. Yeah, basketball is business to most people, but Lamar's always been an emotional player. I couldn't boo him! The 2nd and 3rd quarters were major snoozefests, but Kobe's alley-oop to McRobert's reverse jam definitely woke us all up. In the end, an awesome game!

gathered the friends in san clemente because we needed a re-do of their over-before-it-began christmas party. headed down with jomo cesar and dina, got all the cooking supplies, and fired up the grill before the rest of the kids arrived. soon thereafter the lethal combination of friends, alcohol, and cold medication made the whole night a crazy blur that got out of hand in a jiffy. a good chunk of it can be classified as "this never leaves the room and definitely never goes online". thankfully there were more than enough shots to salvage a full on blog post. thank you to dave, dina, and whoever else documented it all while i was off being crazy stupid love drunk.

After a solid post-JAO clean up session, 4 hours of sleep, a trip to Souplantation, and a nice 2-hour nap, I was ready to just relax and recoup from the previous night's adventure. But with a little convincing, Brian and I took some freebie tickets for Day 2 of White Wonderland. F*ck it, I didn't have work on Monday anyway and I was feeling pretty good and rested! And if we weren't feeling it, we could always leave early. We caught the end of Thomas Gold, AN21 & Max Vangeli, and stayed for the full set for Steve Angello. Yeah, totally worth it!

The only negative was the all white attire. Cool concept, but I didn't have any pockets to carry my camera around. Thanks Kes for letting steal your shots!

There were 2 defining moments of the night for me. The beginning where we all met up on the dance floor, and the end where Angello made everyone sit down and wait for the drop to which the crowd went NUTS! Check the footy.

Out of the 3 concerts I went to this week, this was easily the one I got the drunkest at. Being a long-time supporter of Drake since Comeback Season, I've wanted to see him in concert for a while. And since it was also Cassie's birthday, we made it a family outing! Big Sean brought out the best guests with Wiz Khalifa, Common, Roscoe Dash, and Chris Brown. J. Cole was guestless, but rocked the crowd. Drake brought out the biggest names with Tyga, Justin Bieber, and Lil Wayne. The biggest surprise? How un-hood this 'rap' concert was. Out of the 3 concerts I went to this week, this was easily my favorite. Two of my favorite emcees trading hits back and forth, performing at the same time, feeding off each other's energy. It doesn't get better than this. Hit after hit after hit. As for the 10 9 encores of N*ggas in Paris, we tapped out at 3. Good enough for me. I still rank Kanye's Glow in the Dark tour as my favorite, followed by Jay-Z at the Palladium, but this is a close 3rd.

As I recall, this came after an extremely long week of work (over 12 hours of overtime worked, including 5 hours on this Saturday). I was in the mood for some hanging out, but nothing major since the holiday season and parties would be in full swing soon. So I had some friends over at the Echo Park spot to get dinner, have some drinks, and play some games.

Pho Cafe. The Yelp reviews are all true. This is where hipsters meet Vietnam.

Last Monday I got together with some of my UCSD peeps out in LA for some dinner, dessert, and drinks. If you know me, I have a few different groups, but I don't get to see my college friends very much. I miss hanging out with these knuckleheads.

Thanks to Phil we had a bunch of extra toppings. No complaints here.

The annual thanksgiving dinner with BBC. With everyone's busy schedules we almost let it slip between the cracks. But we can't let this tradition go! So Evita, Fitz, and I took it upon ourselves to deliver the goods. A late Friday night dinner, we had a majority of the food catered from Honeybaked. Totally worth it. The only setback was that since it was a Friday night, people were exhausted from work, so the energy wasn't at 100%. No matter. At least we got some flipcup in and some good quality time with each other. Let the feast begin!

My internship in LA is slowly coming to an end. It's been such an awesome experience being not only at the downtown office, but living in LA. Exactly a year ago we saw Childish open for Mayer Hawthorne (and SoSuperSam open for Childish too!) at the Music Box. So much has changed in a year. Brian, Fitz, and Alex came over to hang and pre- and then we headed out to the show. Afterwards, we ~~hit the after-party up with our best friend Childish and I got Alison Brie's number and I took her to the after-after-party~~ went to Flamin' Taco for 4th meal and passed out. It was a fun, but long and exhausting night at Icon. We followed up with some replenishment at a few different spots on Saturday. First up was Bossa Nova for Brian's Birthday ~~brunch~~ Lunch. Sangria and some kinda tropical slush. The sangria wasn't up to it's normal par.

Walking into the sunset, at 4:30pm.... (I'm not a fan of daylight savings!)

I AM a fan however of the temperature drop. Hoodies, beanies, scarves, and jackets!

Then back to Burbank. We found out a lot of us have never tried the McRib, so we made a night of it! All first timers here!

The verdict: for the price it's not bad! But I'd rather get some nuggets.

My my, how far you've come since last year. Dive bar to lounge/club. 10 guests, to 25+. Not willing to drink to... drinking. The only thing that remains the same is the dancing and the puking. Many made it out Friday night for the preparty at my temporary accommodations in Echo Park and at Icon to celebrate Brian (and Stephen's) birthday(s). I've concluded that the combination of having a hotel so close by (allowing me to preparty hard), and the lack of fresh air down in the HoB basement will lead to a guaranteed blackout. I brought along some of the same gang from last Halloween, along with some old high school friends. And if you've been on my Facebook, you must have seen plenty of my "creeper" shots. Oct 26: Wildlife at The Short Stop

My first post was on June 5, 2008. 3 years, 5 months later and I'm at my 1,000th post! Nearly 40,000 unique visitors. Over 6,000 visitors that have hit my site at least 200 times. That blows me away. I remember that I started this blog because I wanted to start taking pictures, but didn't have an outlet to post them on (I refused to start a MySpace and nobody really had Facebook yet). I love looking at posts from years ago and reminiscing with those who were involved. Sometimes taking pictures and even going out was forced, but its all worth it.

My life isn't as exciting as this blog perceives it to be. Go out there and make something of yourself. Live with no regrets.

I'll continue to live by that last tag line. On to the next one!

After missing the last 2 weeks of Wildlife, I made my return and I tagged along with Mark and Angie to the Short Stop. (And I just moved into their old room, so I'll be here for the next few weeks too!) Our buddy Sam (DJ SoSuperSam - This Way Up) would be moving out to New York soon to pursue her dreams. Honestly, if you have yet to experience Wildlife, you're missing out. Drag your butt out here on Wednesday nights!

The legendary Do Over made its first appearance in sunny San Diego at El Camino. This venue is pretty tiny, but it definitely provided for the jam-packed backyard boogie ambiance of previous Do-Over summers. Thanks to Mr. Asada's white-boy-swag coolness, Edric and I were able to jump the line (much to our discomfort of the bouncer yelling "VIPs coming through!") and get in without pause. Beverage of choice: $20 sangria pitchers that were passed around like the holy grail at the last supper (I hope nobody had mono or the herp). The booming engine roars of planes flying overhead every 15 minutes gave premise to a new DJ drop besides the Funkmaster Flex bomb (RT'd by The Do-Over!). DJ Sabo dropping some moombaliciousness and The Gaslamp Killer with some face-melting beats. And 2 gentlemen of epicness: (1) the old man dancing with every pretty lady within sight, holding a party in his hand; and (2) the university professor who successfully made out with 4 different women, (3 at the same time). My weeknights are so packed these days that I enjoy unwinding and doing very little on the weekends. I pretty much came home to do laundry and catch up on TV and sleep. Lovely. But before that, I ran a few errands and checked out Evita's new place in Culver City.

It was a family event over at Broadway Bar last Friday with Papa Bear (DJ Mark Marcelo), Baby Bear (Brandon aka DJ Kanye Asada), and with her DJing debut Mama Bear (Angie aka DJ Human iPod) working the booth all night. #KIRN. Angie had a great 30-minute starter set, followed by Brandeezy's amazing 2-hour hard-in-the-paint set, and closed by Mark's "I'm playing what I want, it's still my birthday" set.

First off was a quick visit from my parents for my Mom's birthday! Happy birthday Mom!

Ah what a busy night! The night started off with some cooking prep at my company apartment. Followed by some LA and high school friends over for some cookin' and chillin'. And closing with hanging with DJ Mark Marcelo on his birthday at Wildlife. (And here's a throwback to Mark's birthday last year.) Overall an exhausting but awesome night! Thank you everyone who came over for dinner and special shout outs to Fitz and Reyes for getting some beers and extra meat, and Cassie for helping with prep. And good times with Mark reminiscing and people watching as Wildlife got its party on. Happy birthday buddy. I still owe you a drink since you comped my drinks all week. Wednesdays are like my Fridays.

To celebrate, they had a warehouse sale (at their new 3x as big warehouse) with food, drinks, music, entertainment, and some good people. I picked up 3 tanks, 2 tees, 2 v-necks, a poster, and some L&O swaggggg. Good stuff guys.

So much for staying out of LA on Sunday. But when Michael recommends and invites us to a dinner, we come running. And with good cause. This place was a high-end Thai restaurant, but worth it.

after the insane fooding the previous day, my sunday plan was to work out and be anorexic. but then an invite was made to hit up night+market. an invite from mikey soh. and i will follow the food snob to any restaurant on earth. jomo and i headed up with stephen and carie to meet with michael and barbara. that was a lot of names in that previous sentence.

With them moving out to new locations, they decided to have hot pot, snacks, drinks, and one last cab ride out on the town. Jesus. No updates for 3 weeks. I still don't know how my site still has a steady inflow of hits. Soon after the Labor Day weekend, I was out of commission for about a week with a pretty bad cold/flu and stuck inside when I wasn't at work. Here are a few updates via Instagram.

Taking full advantage of my location for the week, I invited friends over on Friday night to hang out and go out. The original plan: preparty at my apartment and then hit up a few bars in Downtown LA. The new plan: preparty at my apartment and then hit up Icon for Janice's surprise birthday party. Similar results, but the new plan was a little more cost-effective (e.g. FREE). I also ran into my cousins Denson and Derrick along with Carlo, James, and Stacy. Friends and fam. A good night.

Starsmith - Lesson One
Another wonderful week before the weekend. The big news: having the company apartment for practically the entire month of September (not including weekends).

The world famous Brodard's spring rolls. Pork for the win.

Pinkberry. An oldie but a goodie.

Moved into the complimentary company apartment for the week. 2 bedrooms. Big living room. Stocked fridge and pantry. Gym. Pool. Tennis court. Walking distance to work. The good life.

Diana, Evita, and Alex brought some housewarming gifts and hung out the first night.

Ehhh... Sorry this was the worst concert experience in my life. It must have been a combination of things. I'd see Wayne again. And I'd go to the Verizon Amphitheater again. And I'd see a show with my high school friends again. Yet somehow, the combination of these 3 things resulted in a subpar night. Can't win em all.

I consider myself to be pretty lucky. I have great friends that love to hang out and enjoy great food, and I'm not gaining as much weight as I should be. The only thing hurting is my wallet. But a small cost for great memories, conversation, and new foods to try.

Monday
Carpooled with Maggie up to DTLA, and carpooled back. After a "long" (we left work early hah!) day of work, our appetites got the best of us and we went over to Gatten Revolving Sushi in Cerritos. I tried sweet shrimp and uni! $2 plates and $1.75 beers. Good shit. Then some milk tea from yet another new Guppies location.

Tuesday
Went up to LA after work to have dinner with Mikey Soh and Jenny Le. I remember when Jenny used to have a crush on Michael back in elementary school. Thanks for making me the third wheel... Westside Tavern in West LA for some shiitake mushroom/bacon/asparagus flat bread, cheeseburger (YES BURGER CRAWL 2011 IS STILL GOING! and this one is pretty up there), grilled cheese/tomato basil soup, and the best toffee cake I've ever had (topped with mascarpone cheese).

Wednesday
KEYS TO THE COMPANY APARTMENT!

More to come later...
Spent the afternoon working out with Ligan (P90X Back/Biceps, Ab Ripper X) and cleaning up the Burbank house. More room for activities! We worked up quite the appetite, so we got ~~food~~ drinks at Lala's Argentine Grill and Laurel Tavern with Evita and Diana (followed by Alex aka The Count).

Lala's sangria is top shelf material.

Roomie toast! (Sorry Alex and Ryan.)

Bitburger non-alcoholic beer. Smells like ass, but has a decent taste.

Watching the Throne at Staples on December 12th!
